Who´s eating who?

We are in the middle of the summer now and from previous years we remember that this is the time when the spiders and other creepy crawlers that we share our house with are most active. This morning we found the outcome of what looked like an epic struggle on the wall next to the washing machine, just outside the kitchen door (WARNING: contains images that some of you may find unpleasant)...

One of the tiger spiders (araña de tigre), called like this for it´s dark stripes that make it easy to distinguish from other species, somehow managed to catch a cockroach:


These spiders are not small, but it did look a bit like that meal will keep her fed for a while... Just to add some scale to this, the cockroach is about 2.5cm long.


We like having the araña de tigre around the house because they are harmless and apparently keep the population of the venomous recluse spiders (araña de rincon) in check. And truth be told, we don´t mind if they add the odd cockroach or so to their diet. q-:
